History of the Guild

History of the Guild

History of the Guild

Up until about the 1860s wine was one of the most important sources of income for the Cape Colony. The Drakenstein area became a major wine producing area.

In the late 19th century the wine industry in the Cape collpased as a result of Phylloxera - an insect that causes permanent damage to the roots of the vines.

To prevent the total collapse of the wine industry, another initiative was introduced that impacted the area. The establishment of co-operative wine cellars of which Drakentstein Co-operative Winery was the first. It was established in 1906 in Simondium with 10 members.

This co-operative is now operating as Simondium Guild and houses a number of local businesses serving the community: Painted Wolf Wines, Soul Barrel Brewing Company, Sip Society Café, Conquerer and Fanglasstic, among others.

The original gables of the Cape Dutch Architecture from the mid 1800's to early 1900's are still evident on the building.
